Eliminate major violators
Gluten, corn, dairy, soy, eggs and peanuts. There is a reason why these foods cause the most common food allergies among our population. We are not only overly exposed to these foods as part of a standard American diet, but are also major offenders when it comes to foods that disrupt our digestive function and immunity. Also on the list of exceptions are processed vegetable oils (hi pro-inflammatory omega-6), beans, legumes and lentils (their high fiber content can cause distress), foods high in added sugars and special nuts (cashews, hazelnuts and pistachios) that are harder digest.
More food, less drink.
Although we recommend getting enough water throughout the day (half the weight in ounces is optimal), focus on drinking this fluid before or after meals, but never during. This will not only help you focus on our other eating recommendations (focus on eating, eat slowly), but it will also make it easier for your body to break down and digest food. Alcohol, coffee, and tea should be ruled out, as they can interfere with the digestion and absorption of nutrients needed to treat the intestines.
Spin your squirrels
Speaking of food intolerances and allergies, this is a protein of food to which the body responds. As Americans, we tend to eat the same food over and over, so that when we jeopardize our intestinal health, we can begin to respond to the things that are common in our diet. Since our diet does not have a large number of different proteins (beef and chicken are the most common), it is this category of food that may be most at risk for food sensitivity. The GUT.FIX nutrition plan rotates various proteins (or products that are biologically similar) to not only provide variety, but also help prevent the occurrence of food sensitivities or allergies. After a couple of weeks of eating boiled vegetables (and taking supplements that support the intestines), start adding a serving of raw vegetables every day so you can easily eat them, with the ability to test your tolerance.
Reduction in the number of other major offenders
So here is the thing. If you eliminate the biggest criminals listed above, you will be in great shape to maintain your intestinal health. But there are several other groups of foods that are often considered healthy (and ironically advertised as bowel foods in other bowel health programs) that can actually interfere with complete bowel healing if you respond to them. These product groups include FODMAPS (short-chain fermented carbohydrates such as garlic and onions), whole nuts and seeds, whole grains (even gluten-free, such as wild rice), fermented foods (such as sauerkraut), and nightshade vegetables (bell peppers) , white potatoes, etc.).
