Today I talk to Ashley Britney with my healthy happy life. – she ran and met with the marathon in New York several times, and she is a resident of New York, so she shares the best tips on how to prepare for the course, what you need to know for the morning race, as well as tips for the audience .
I ran the race in 2013, but she is an expert, so we hit all the bases, including – one food that you MUST eat while in New York (spoiler: this is NOT a pizza!?). And most tips will help you prepare for any race – at any distance! We find the time when you cooked food and made friends, and much more!
This is also a very interesting conversation – I forgot, until she mentioned – we first met in the Reach the Beach Relay race years ago to come back!
We have a lot of curious tips and hang out with us in this episode!
If you're new here … I'm Monica Olivas – runner marathon, food marathon and podcaster in Southern California. I started RunEatRepeat.com to share my work and weight loss – it’s turned into a terrific online community, and now it's a podcast.
The podcast warms up:
I launched Big Bear Marvelon. And I'm talking to you … so I did not die.
But I did get a little sick right before the race, and I did this interview with Ashley the day after I breathed, and the sound was overcrowded. Gross. But if you run faster, it sounds better … so speed up!
I shared a short review of the race here >>> Revel Marathon Big Bear Top 10 Highlights
But let's talk about how it really came down …
I realized that I got sick on Thursday and tried to fight sleep and vitamin C. But I had an unusual VIP trip to Disneyland, scheduled for Friday, and I could not take it on bail. So I got sick. It was mainly moco and mouth breathing.
Saturday … I got up early and bought new tires for my car, because I was driving all the way to Redlands with my only friend and wanted her to be safe. And my brother told me that it’s not smart to ride flat old tires, so … yes.
I was hungry on the way there, and I realized that I hadn’t eaten lunch, so we stopped at Chick Phil A around 4:30 pm. It was not the best foothill food, but SR lives in Alaska, where there is no Chick Fil A, and I live in a fantasy world for no reason.
We got our bibs and went to my house Nino and Nina – they were about an hour from me, and they were about 20 minutes from the shuttle bus for the race.
Revel Big Bear launches a mountain in Big Bear, so you need to park and drive to the starting line. It will take almost an hour to get to the very beginning! So CP scared me because she kept worrying about having to urinate on the bus, so she dodged the queue to urinate somewhere, and then I thought I should bake at the pontoon Boston marathon. And we will find out if she listens to the show if she tells me something about it. Boom
Race – last week I set myself several goals, mainly because I wanted to just say: I run a marathon. OK, bye. – and leave it on it was awkward.
My goals were:
A. Run a sub-4-hour marathon
B. End the marathon with a strong – smart, pay attention to fuel and what I feel to learn from it.
C. Done.
D. Do not die.
I hit my target and launched it at 3:50:47. Pace 8:48.
Notes: I never felt that I was in a zone. When you run 26 miles and are not going to PR, I like to go to a pace where I feel that "I can do this all day." [ How to Pace Yourself for a Marathon ]
I felt all the time. It seems that it took more effort than it should have given the steps I was taking in trying to preserve it. There are many reasons why I didn’t feel 100% – my fitness level, height or me when I was in the rain or in my nerves or shitty gas station or stomach … ?? But I am happy that, despite the fact that I do not feel fine, I did it!
I stopped in the toilets 2 times and not in a hurry.
I wanted to go through the rest of the race for about 19 miles. I went through the water station and SR took some pictures of me around this point.
I did not want to leave, but I just wanted to go in the last 6 miles. But SR kept tapping me, and we argued. And she was silent for a while, and then she started again, and I was angry.
But I'm glad she pushed me because I'm proud of how I did it.
And I am grateful to her for the fact that she went out for this race with me, because over the past year and a half I have registered for several marathons and either went down half or left everything together.
I probably would have done it again – so SR deserves all the respect that I spent the whole marathon.
And now I feel much better about myself and my abilities. This is not about time – I do not think I could.

New York Marathon race – there are a lot of photos here too
(I think the only picture I had with Ben after the race) I froze after the race and just wanted to find it and enter. He watched the race with friends, and as soon as they found me, they clicked together and we headed inside.
Awards:
The 1st place goes to SR, aka, Skinny Runner aka @BarlesHambone, being my only friend, a photographer, and agrees to sleep with me, but I really do not touch me.
2nd place – Brooks Running sent me a pair of special NYC Marathon shoes! They are so funny! I love them!!
