“Look at the opportunities for adventure, not the obstacles that get in the way,” Alastair Humphries wrote in his widely popular book: Micro adventures: local discoveries for great shootsPublished many years before the new coronavirus (COVID-19) caused border closures, social distance and self-isolation, Humphries was ahead of his time.
The book suggests that artificially occupied lives interfere with great adventures before they begin. Decision? Humphries advises against complicating. “Make your adventure so small and light that there is no excuse,” he writes, “good advice during a pandemic when many of us are stuck at home and trying to find an adventure.”
“Sometimes all you need to do is climb a hill, spend time looking at the empty horizon, jump into a cold river or sleep under the stars, or share whiskey in a small village hotel to remind yourself what is most important in life,” he says. Humphries, a geo-events researcher of the year who once spent four years on bicycles around the world.
For someone who has gained fame by strolling through deserts and rowing through the oceans, speaking out for small local adventures, it’s amazing, but that’s the point. Problems may be different today, but logic holds water. "Wait until you suddenly and simultaneously have a lot of money and a lot of time, this is stupid."
Humphries suggests that you use the time you already have, for example, travel time between workdays and weekends, for adventure. He suggests exploring areas near your home using equipment that is already in your garage, such as a regular bike, a deck, a camping stove, and a sleeping bag. This is wise advice for today too.
"Adventure it’s a free word meaning different things for different people, ”he writes. “This is a state of mind, a spirit to try something new and leave your comfort zone. Adventures of enthusiasm, ambition, open-mindedness and curiosity. Adventure can be found everywhere, and we must find it. ”
In this spirit, here are 16 offers for small and local adventures that are suitable for today. Not everything will be possible in your place due to differences in rules and security measures. Some of them will do better than others, but the point that Humphrey repeats is to just get started.
